Greetings!

Greetings, and thank you for taking the time to check out my blog! This is where I’ll be making updates on my trek to Senegal for the duration of my trip.

Travelling to Africa has long been a dream of mine, but making that dream into a reality has always been a little bit tricky. It is too often in life that we find ourselves too short on time or money to up and go on the adventures that truly fuel our hearts, and I have certainly been caught in this paradigm myself! This is partly why I decided last January to really go for it, to embrace the spirit of ‘Why Not?’, and start investigating volunteer opportunities abroad.

Senegal was particularly appealing to me because of its stability as a country and also because of the opportunity to live in a French speaking community. Through research I discovered a myriad of organizations that offer volunteer opportunities but I decided to go with Projects Abroad. They offer quite a lot of support and also hook you up with a family to stay with, other volunteers and also meaningful volunteer work. I will be staying in the city of St. Louis, located 1 hour north of the capital of Dakar, teaching English to school aged children and possibly adults.

Other than what I’ve read online and in travel books describing the nuts and bolts of Senegal, I am not too sure what to expect. I definitely know that being away from home, from Nathan and family and friends will be challenging, but it’s not every day that your husband says “Why not just go to Africa?” in a loving way that tells you he’s not just trying to get rid of you.

So… here I am, slightly nervous but definitely excited to get this adventure underway!
